Therapy with a Cultural Humility Lens For Immigrant Americans, First Generation Americans, BIPOC, and/or Cultural Minorities
Being bicultural, a first generation American, an immigrant, and/or the child of immigrants can impact your life in a multitude of ways. For some, it is easy to find beauty in the different aspects of their identity. They find security and belonging within their culture, and within their identity in American society. For other BIPOC, it can be difficult to identify a place where you belong. Code-switching, or shutting down different parts of yourself in different settings or relationships, may have become frustrating and exhausting. This frustration might also prompt feelings of guilt, or make you feel disloyal towards your family. All of this can begin to build up and begin negatively impacting your sense of self, your self-esteem, and your sense of belonging. If you also belong to the LGBTQIA+ community, or if you have chosen a path that is not aligned with your family’s wishes, such as not observing your family’s religion, you may be feeling chronically misunderstood or alienated.
Perhaps you've attempted to share your feelings with friends, only to find them quick to pass judgment on you or your family, leaving you feeling even more upset. Maybe you've sought therapy before, but your therapist seemed more focused on labeling you than on truly understanding who you are and what matters to you in a comprehensive sense.
If you would like to start working with a therapist who is eager to honor and understand all of the parts of you, please reach out. We are here for you and we are ready. Email us at Scheduling@bekindomaha.com or call 402-277-9499, for your free 20-minute phone consultation.
At Be Kind Counseling, we’re committed to holding a space where you can safely share and explore all parts of yourself, while honoring your heritage in whatever way feels best for you. We understand that the mental health field has historically not considered intersectionality as a factor in treatment. We are committed to changing that by having an approach that celebrates your individuality as well as your multicultural background, while addressing whatever’s coming up in your daily life that’s bringing you into therapy. Our warm, client-centered approach is intersectional and humble: we will affirm and honor you, your experiences, and work to understand you and the unique, nuanced way that you see the world.
At Be Kind Counseling, as you begin to unpack and process with your therapist, our hope is that you will gain a new appreciation for yourself and all the layers of however you identify. This may include what you’ve experienced (discrimination, microaggressions, being chronically misunderstood), how you’re perceived in society (race, class, age, gender, sexuality), and how you relate to others in different roles (son/daughter/child, spouse, parent, friend, partner, colleague). From there, we’ll explore how all of these pieces of your life may be impacting your mental health, including your relationship with yourself and how you feel on a day-to-day basis.
Why is being culturally humble and culturally affirming important to us? Because we’ve been there.
We know how hard it can be to muster up the courage to ask for help, and how frustrating it can be to feel unseen, bypassed, or misunderstood. Be Kind Counseling was founded by a first-generation Iranian-American woman, and each therapist on our team has committed themselves to using a cultural humility lens and to engaging in anti-racism work. While we come from a diversity of backgrounds and cultural experiences ourselves, we pride ourselves in showing up for our clients without an agenda, so that they can be their most authentic selves and create the path that works best for them.
Wherever you are on your mental health journey, whether you’re just getting started or are a therapy veteran, we are committed to joining with you in this work. At Be Kind Counseling, we delight in seeing and honoring you as you are, with all of your beautiful complexities and paradoxes.

Shelly is a gift from God! I have been seeing her since I was a sophomore in high school. She has helped me through the highs and lows of life, and I don't know what I would do without her. I highly recommend checking out this place if you struggle with mental health issues. You will find smiling faces & a listening ear if you decide to come here.

I have been in therapy previously and never felt understood the way I do with Lisa. She really takes the time and energy to understand and validate my struggles. I am neurodivergent and with Lisa’s help I have found a path forward to live a life that is fulfilling and meaningful. She has truly changed my life.
